Cosmic ray propagation around sources

Cosmic rays (CRs) are high-energy particles that permeate the Galaxy and reach Earth. As messenger particles from our galaxy they shape our understanding of the galactic environment.
One outstanding question is how CRs propagate in the environment around their sources, e.g. supernova remnants (SNR), and merge with the interstellar medium (ISM). These two environments exist in very different regimes with some characteristic quantities differing by many orders of magnitude. The current approach does not fully account for this, by e.g. considering only ballistic transport between these two regimes. However, a more realistic description is needed to connect these very different regimes.
In my thesis, I want to tackle these problems by properly describing the regime between source and ISM, giving the first complete description of CR propagation from sources into the ISM.
I will use numerical methods, self-consistently couple MHD and CR transport, making points of contact to observations and existing analytic theory where possible.
