The Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) has for main research foci; of which one is the formation, evolution, and dynamical evolution of Galaxies, including observational cosmology, another the formation of stars and planets, a third on the evolution of exoplanets and their atmospheres, and the fourth one the development of state-of-the-art instrumentation techniques for large ground-based telescopes and space missions. MPIA has operated for many years the Calar Alto Observatory in south-east Spain.
